Stanford Hospital and Clinics and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital are located in Northern California in the city of Palo Alto, approximately 40 miles from San Francisco, 45 miles from the Santa Cruz beach and 200 miles from the Sierra Nevada mountains.
The Bay Area has a rural/suburban environment with easy access to cities, beaches, and mountains. Nearby cities include San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Berkeley and Palo Alto. West of San Francisco is the Pacific Ocean and the scenic Pacific Coast from Monterey and Big Sur in the south to the Mendocino coast in the north. East over the hills, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, including Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, offer unmatched hiking and skiing about three hours away.
The Valley also offers a full range of recreational activities minutes away. Windsurfers can cruise the windy waters at Del Valle or Shadow Cliffs regional parks provide trails for the casual walker and serious hiker. Cyclists of all levels will find trails ranging from scenic flat country lanes to steep, challenging climbs in the nearby hills. Jogging and walking are also popular activities.
